The Story Behind Karma Samaj Foundation
My father, a retired Government Servant, possessed generous spirit.
He was the kind of a man, who never lectured about values,
still lived them every single day.
After retirement, his needs were few.
His pension arrived faithfully each month and went largely untouched.
Both his sons (I being the younger son) were settled and self-reliant.
By every measure, all the conditions for a generous man to give back
were perfectly in place.
So one fine morning I sat beside him and said —
"Pitaji, with God's grace and your blessings, both of us
(I and my elder brother) are doing well.
You have no expenses to meet from your pension which is fully saved.
Why don't you do some charity?"
He looked at me — and in a tone that carried not reluctance,
but a lifetime of careful observation — he asked just two words:
"कहाँ करें?"
(Where do I give?)
I was speechless.
Those two words were not the words of a man who did not want to give.
They were the words of a man who wanted to give deeply —
but had watched too many organisations from a careful distance.
He had seen how a ₹100 donation travels through so many hands
that only ₹30 — perhaps less — reaches the person who actually needs it.
He was not cynical. He was simply honest.
And his honesty silenced me completely.
I could not sleep that night.
I lay awake with those two words over and over.
And somewhere in the quiet of that night, I realised a very profound thing:
My father was not alone.
He never was.
Millions of Indians carry the same generous impulse in their hearts.
And the same unanswered question on their lips.
They want to give.
They are ready to give.
They simply do not know where they can give and are completely sure
that their giving arrives the right hands undiluted.
That sleepless night was not wasted.
By the morning, I had found my answer —
and the seed of Karma Samaj Foundation had taken root.
