Stories of Hope · Volunteer Stories

They didn't donate blood.
They made it possible for others to.

Behind every blood donation camp is a group of people who arrive early and leave late.

They register donors. Manage queues. Distribute refreshments. Hand over certificates with a smile. Coordinate with the medical team. Photograph the moments. Call up stragglers. Clean up after everyone had gone home.

They are the volunteers. And without them, no camps can be organised smoothly.

This page is to celebrate their stories — who showed up, without being in the spotlight, and made everything else possible.

Volunteer Stories

The people who showed up.

"For years, I was involved in organising camps as a Lion. I just didn't know we were building something larger."

I have been a member of the Lions Club for many years. I have helped organise blood donation camps — small ones and large ones, in community halls and corporate offices, in summer heat and winter mornings.

Each camp taught me something different. About what makes donors come back. About what makes first-timers hesitate at the door. About what a volunteer's smile does for someone who is nervous about giving blood for the first time.

It was in those camps that I understood something important: when volunteering is done with warmth and care, the donor leaves feeling honoured. When it is done coldly, they leave feeling processed.

Karma Samaj Foundation is, in many ways, my attempt to build the warmest possible machinery for giving — so that every person who walks into our camp, or visits our website, or posts a need, or fulfils one — feels honoured. Not just thanked. Honoured.

That is what volunteering taught me.

"Service above self — what that phrase actually feels like at 7 AM, setting up tables before the donors arrive."

Lions Clubs International — one of the world's largest service organisations — has documented the motivations of thousands of volunteers across its global network. The consistent finding, across cultures and geographies, is this:

Volunteers do not primarily give their time for recognition, or for career benefit, or even primarily for the beneficiary. They give their time because of how it makes them feel — purposeful, connected, and part of something larger than their daily life.

One Lions Club volunteer, documented in their service impact records, described the feeling of setting up a blood donation camp at 7 AM on a Sunday:

"Everyone else is still in bed. And you're here, arranging tables, because today — right here — someone's life might change. That feeling is worth every early morning."

That feeling is what we are building at Karma Samaj Foundation — one camp at a time.
